Congratulations Mahtab Hussain -finalist for Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2023!!!

• @mahtabhussain I am deeply honored to have been selected as a finalist for The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2023 at the @nationalportraitgallery

Some of you may recall that I previously worked at The National Portrait Gallery. It's been thirteen years since I left to embark on a career as an artist, with the goal of filling a significant void in art history - that of conveying the intricacies of the South Asian/Muslim experience in Britain, and now on a global scale.

During my time at the NPG as a designer, I was privileged to be a part of the team that contributed to the creation of the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. At that time, while collaborating with curators and the exhibition team, I would often envision myself being a part of this esteemed exhibition. Now, I am proud to say that I have achieved that dream, having made the shortlist twice.

The portrait I'm presenting is of Rida Qureshi, a young woman I had the pleasure of meeting in LA while working on a substantial series focused on the American Muslim experience. This project has taken me to various cities including Toronto, NYC, LA, and most recently, Baltimore. Over the past three years, I've had the privilege of creating over 155 portraits, and there is still more to come. While the series remains under wraps, I'm thrilled to share this particular portrait with all of you.

Rida and I initially connected on Instagram. She shared her passion for skateboarding and expressed a desire for a portrait featuring her board. Instead of a conventional portrait with her holding the board, I began exploring ways to incorporate it while still maintaining my signature three-quarter length portrait style. This pays homage to the court paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. Additionally, being in LA, I couldn't resist including the iconic Walk of Fame in the portrait.

A big thank you to @chrisbootinsta who is producing and editing the series and @eastwingphoto who have been a big supporter of the series too and of course every single person I’ve met and created work with over the last three years in America.
