23 - 25 February Fort Mason Arts Centre

East Wing announces its participation in the second edition of Photofairs San Francisco, the West Coast’s only fair exclusively focused on the photographic arts. East Wing will present a solo exhibition by Mandy Barker and her award winning series, Beyond Drifting: imperfectly known animals.

Made while on residency at Sirius Arts Centre in Ireland, Beyond Drifting mixes history, in-depth research and a bit of fiction in the creation of plastic 'specimens' which reflect on the insidious global pandemic of plastic waste damaging our waterways and coastlines.  Harkening back to historic scientific studies by biologist, John Vaughn Thompson in Cork Harbour from the early 1800's,  Mandy Barker collected plastic from the area to create these new 'specimens' as a way of revealing the shocking fact that the same species of plankton Thompson studied over 100 years ago are now ingesting plastic microbeads.

Shortlisted for the 2017 Prix Pictet Photography Award in sustainability, Beyond Drifting: imperfectly known animals is also a breathtakingly beautiful book published by Overlapse.

During the weeks leading up to  Photofairs San Francisco, Mandy will be heading a a workshop with youth mentoring programme, First Exposures, a non profit organisation that seeks to empower youth through photography. Mandy and members of the Youth Advisory Panel from First Exposures will give a talk at  on Sunday 25 February at Fort Mason. There will also be scheduled book signings during the fair.
