Katrin Koenning is a photographer originally from Ruhrgebiet, Germany, based in Naarm Melbourne, Austraila on unceded Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung country. Probing the currencies of the document, Koenning’s work stretches across still and moving images and text, at times including found materials. In her extended image dialogues she uses fragments and slippages to suggest narrative spaces, communities and lived experiences that are open, fluid and multiplicit.
Koenning’s artistic practice centers on themes of connection and relation, positing imaginaries with a greater than human world. Many of her longform series render nonhuman entanglement and intimate kin.
Koenning is the recipient of multiple awards, including, the Bowness Photography Prize (Australia). Her work has been exhibited in Australia and internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including presentations at Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai (UAE), Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography (BD), Paris Photo Art Fair (FR), Hamburg Triennial of Photography (DE), Monash Gallery of Art (AU) and Australian Centre for Photography, among others.
